Overview

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape . . . and even less of being together.

Desperate to save her life, Lia's erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komisar that she has a magical gift, and the Komisar's interest in Lia is greater than either Kaden or Lia foresaw.

Meanwhile, the foundations of Lia's deeply-held beliefs are crumbling beneath her. Nothing is straightforward: there's Rafe, who lied to her, but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom she always believed to be barbarians but whom she now realizes are people who have been terribly brutalized by the kingdoms of Dalbreck and Morrighan. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her very sense of self, Lia will have to make powerful choices that affect her country, her people . . . and her own destiny.

Read by Emily Rankin, with Ryan Gesell, Kirby Heyborne, Kim Mai Guest, and Ann Marie Lee

Editorial Reviews

SEPTEMBER 2015 - AudioFile

The second book in the Remnant Chronicles is told from multiple points of view, though most of the story is told through the eyes of Princess Lia, narrated by Emily Rankin. Rankin is faced with the task of portraying the princess as young and sometimes naïve yet strong and continuously developing as a character, which she does well. Alternating sections are also told through the voices of Rafe, the prince of Dalbreck, narrated by Ryan Gesell; Kaden, the Vendan assassin, narrated by Kirby Heyborne; and Pauline, Lia’s friend who is desperately trying to rescue her from her imprisonment in Venda, narrated by Kim Mai Guest. Additional narrative between chapters is read by Ann Marie Lee. While the various narrators help the listener differentiate between the characters, the variety also creates some inconsistencies in the voicing of dialogue, with each narrator reading characters slightly differently. The cliff-hanger ending will leave listeners eagerly awaiting the next installment. E.N. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine

From the Publisher

It's rare that the second book in a series is as good-or perhaps better-than the first, but that's the case here. . . . Anticipation for the next volume will start as soon as this one is put down.” —Booklist, Starred Review

“A heart-pounding sequel that fantasy fans will appreciate.” —School Library Journal

“Solid and absorbing high fantasy, with a sudden breathless hook to the next installment.” —Kirkus Reviews
