Overview

In his eighty-third year of life, Dr. Jerry Flora, Professor Emeritus of Theology and Spiritual Formation at Ashland Theological Seminary, offers his reflections on life and faith on the pages of Into His Hands. This collection of essays, both a memoir and a witness, is filled with nuggets of truth and hope for those who desire to follow Christ. Throughout his musings, Flora reminds his readers of the truth of Pelikan's words: "If Christ is risen, nothing else matters. And if Christ is not risen, nothing else matters."Yet he also writes of the need for the believer to hurl himself into the hands of Christ, who catches and holds and flings us forward into the heart of God. He acknowledges the questions that come with a life of faith, but also understands that there is a time to sweep up broken pieces, put one foot in front of the other and walk with God into the future, whatever that might be.

About the Author

Since the age of eight when he first walked his church’s red-carpeted aisle for salvation, Jerry Flora has been a Jesus follower. Answering a call to ministry, he trained at the former Ashland College and Seminary. He served as a pastor first in a small village in Indiana and then in an urban neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Graduate degrees from Fuller Seminary and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary readied him for a teaching career. He returned to Ashland Seminary where he taught for thirty years. At retirement in 2002 Dr. Flora was named Professor Emeritus of Theology and Spiritual Formation.
Although he has lived from coast to coast, he is a Hoosier by birth and a Buckeye by adoption. Along the way he has been a janitor, caddy, lawn-care worker, choir director and retreat speaker. He was co-founder of the LifeSpring School of Spiritual Formation and its co-director for ten years. From 1995 to 2008 he was a guest instructor at Pennsylvania’s Kairos School of Spiritual Formation. He has also served as national vice-president and newsletter editor for the Disciplined Order of Christ.
Dr. Flora and his wife Julie have been married almost sixty years. They have two daughters, Janet and Ann, and two grandchildren, Vanessa and Matthew. A soul-friend to many, he relishes family and friends, reading and music, sunrise and sunset.
