Overview

Modern slavery is happening all around you . . . and you can be part of the solution.

Human trafficking is not just something that happens in other countries. Nor is it something that just happens to "other people," such as runaways or the disenfranchised. Even kids in your own neighborhood can fall victim. But they don't have to.

Through true stories and expertise from her many years of boots-on-the-ground experience, anti-trafficking expert Nita Belles teaches you everything you need to know about human trafficking in the United States, helping you identify risk factors, take practical steps to keep your loved ones and neighbors safe from predators, and recognize trafficking around you, so that you can help fight it.

Library Journal - Audio

10/01/2015
Belles doesn't mince words when it comes to describing human trafficking: it is slavery. As an antitrafficking crusader, she teaches people how to detect when it's happening around them and in particular how to safeguard family and friends from becoming victims since criminals find ways to manipulate the vulnerable into forced labor as maids, sex workers, farmworkers, and janitors. Nicol Zanzarella's powerful, lucent narration keeps the listener engaged despite the grim subject matter. Belles delivers hope of salvation both physical and spiritual for those extricated from the hands of traffickers, pushing for programs that work with victims to help them rebuild their lives. VERDICT Recommended for all public library collections for, as Belles notes, no area of the United States is safe from human trafficking.—Kelly Sinclair, Temple P.L., TX

MARCH 2017 - AudioFile

The author’s message on human trafficking is grave, so Nicol Zanzarella treats it accordingly in her narration. However, the organization of the book itself challenges her effectiveness. Repetition may be an effort to reinforce details, but it also has the potential to desensitize some listeners to the horror contained in the narratives. Also, while Zanzarella infuses those narratives with humanity and compassion, their emotional impact may be further lost each time Belles interjects long sections of commentary. The issue of human trafficking is certainly one that needs exposure; Belles is knowledgeable in this arena, and Zanzarella delivers her message with appropriate respect and tone. Those who find the audiobook’s organization effective will be well informed and prepared to contribute to the fight against this abomination. J.F. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
