About the Author

David Kissane is Professor/Director of Palliative Medicine and Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, President of The International Psycho-Oncology Society and an internationally renowned psycho-oncologist, bereavement researcher and clinician.
Sidney Bloch has a personal Chair in Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, is an internationally regarded teacher and has authored several books on psychotherapy, ethics and families.

Description: This new book is a comprehensive guide for family-centered therapy during palliative care and grief. This is the tenth volume in the Facing Death series.
Purpose: The book presents a model of bereavement therapy in which the participation of the family in clinical care is promoted. The target audience includes physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, pastoral care workers and psychiatrists. The authors have done a significant amount of scientific research on grief, much of which is detailed in an appendix to the book.
Audience: This book is useful to the novice as well as the seasoned clinician.
Features: The book covers detailed step-by-step guidelines on providing family- focused grief therapy (FFGT). This therapeutic model focuses on the experience of grief in the context of family relationships. The authors make excellent use of clinical vignettes to illustrate the application of their therapeutic interventions. Challenges to therapy, the impact of specific life events and ethics are also considered in considerable depth. The book is organized an easy to read format.
Assessment: This book provides fairly detailed guidelines for doing an innovative type of therapy. It fills the need for a more comprehensive approach to grief in the context of both palliative care and bereavement. In doing so, it addresses an important topic for anyone who works with dying patients and their families.
