Overview

My father wrote these essays and articles for parent magazines. Some were published in local newsletters. Laurie, my younger sister, had a very problematic childhood in which she was diagnosed with learning disabilities and developmental delays that changed by the year, none of which adequately explained her challenges. Writing about his experiences was one of the ways that my father attempted to make sense of the situation, and to connect with others who may have had insight. Today, Laurie is 44 and living in a group home, and we both miss our father very much.

About the Author

Michael Edward Policoff was born February 26, 1946. He wrote throughout his life, finding his footing with poetry, exploring his world through short stories, and ultimately creating large novels. Though he was never able to find a publisher for his work, this never slowed his pace down, and he wrote until he passed away February 3, 2004.

Michael attended the Flint Community College. He remained in sales throughout his life in one form or another; he owned and operated a charming cigar shop turned convenient store in downtown Cleveland for many years, and eventually found himself selling stunning Russian matroyshka dolls he would travel overseas to acquire. Michael was a member of several civic groups and Jewish community groups. The common theme of the author's life was people. Never far from an easy grin, Michael loved people, and he made friends everywhere he went. He will always be missed by many.
